Picture report

Post by Brianzz » Wed Dec 26, 2018 12:30 pm

Not really a trip report, just a picture post and a couple of thoughts.

Hotel:
Horseshoe: Premium 2 queen - spot on, nice, clean, well maintained. FYI, no in room coffee that I could see. They give you coupons for a free 12 oz drip coffee at Starbucks in the lobby (2 per night booked) as you can imagine the lines were loooooooong every morning. Not too wild about Starbucks bitter drip coffee, didn't use them. This is also concerning to me, seems they're cutting costs.
Roadhouse: Luxury 1 king - worn, broken mirror, alarm clock missing parts, holes in carpet, couch torn. Needs a good cleaning and update, but the casino is closing and the hotel is for sale, CET clearly gives 0 fucks about Roadhouse.
At both casinos nobody knew how to use the free WiFi (included in your resort fees) they only knew how to get on the $15 a day WiFi.

Food:
Horseshoe buffet: Ate here twice. Usually really good, wasn't impressed this time. Asian station pretty much had nothing but rice, lo mien, egg rolls frog legs (gross) and a few soups. Prime Rib was good the first night, just OK the 2nd night, everything else I ate was mediocre, at best. I was there on seafood both nights, which I'm not a huge fan of, it may have been better.
8 oz Burger: Ate here 3 times. Slow, disorganized and chaotic, had to remind them each time about sides that go with my order despite them having the receipt right in front of them. I'm sure people have starved to death here waiting for their food.
Gold Strike buffet: Ate here once, was going for a 2nd time but they closed before I made it. Everything here was really good, puts the other buffets in Tunica to shame. I was skeptical about the cheddar cheese on the baked ziti, but the sauce made up for it.

Gambling:
See photos and disclaimer at bottom.

These aren't all the wins, but the cream of the crop.

Looks like a great winning trip, but when I got home I tallied up what I brought to lose + the handpays played back and I was into 5 digit losses. Evidently it's not a good idea to play max on pennies in Tunica.

You had some great wins there! I hope you came home with some of your money? You and I think alike in some ways-don't go there to sit in the room! Sad to hear about HS buffet. I wasn't too impressed with it last time either, but the Asian station was being remodeled and that is usually my fave. Remodel something to mess it up? GS has upped it's game for the buffet IMO. We've had lunch at HW several times and it's been really good. Haven't tried dinner there though. I figured the rooms at Roadhouse were likely not great. They haven't been remodeled for years, except for the couple that were being used as meth labs, and they were worn way back to the ice storm days.

I'm not even going to comment on max bet on pennies. We have had that discussion before. LOL.

Glad you got away for a few days to blow off some steam.

Sure glad you had some nice wins, since you were there to celebrate your birthday, you had some extra money to play and get all those awesome hits. Wishes for some money to make it home only come true, when you put some of your wins away, then forget you got them until you get home. See Brian, old age pays! I'm always forgetting where I put things. LOL Yeah the HS buffet was not that great last trip. Sad when we know it was #1 for several years. Glad you had a fun trip, hope we make it there the same time in the near future. Be fun to see you, again.

Those are some nice hits!

Hopefully next time you end up in the black.

I had the Horseshoe buffet last week for the first time. I'm glad it was comped and that's the nicest thing I can say about it. On the other hand, the Gold Strike breakfast buffet continues to be excellent.

Treblehook, I also love the GS breakfast buffet. My go to is a mushroom, onion, spinach omelet. I give Fitz the edge for crispy bacon, but most everything else goes to GS buffet. Hash, a couple of potato choices, cooked eggs for those not wanting to wait for omelets, fresh fruit. Now I'm getting hungry! LOL.

Horseshoe used to be the best buffet in town. Of course I think most of them have taken turns at being the best as well as the worst. After Brian and your reporting, I'm sorry to hear that our not so stellar meal there in April was not just an anomaly.

If I'd have ever eaten at the Horseshoe buffet, it would have been back in the mid 2000's and I don't remember it. So I was pretty excited to try it when CET sent me a comp. Everything was either bland or odd-flavored. I guess my favorite thing was the cornbread with the light frosting. The Pepsi machine was even disappointing. Since it looked like a Coke freestyle machine, I was hoping for a ton of options, but it was just a regular fountain with a fancy lcd display.

In my opinion, the Gold Strike breakfast buffet has been consistently good for the last two or three years.

The Fitz breakfast buffet was good this last trip also. I noticed they layer the bottom of the bacon pan with bread slices...probably one of the secrets to good bacon. The fried bologna was new for me this time and delicious also with some fried eggs and gravy.

Although I didn't check it out this trip, the Hollywood breakfast buffet has been great the last two or three years also.

When in Tunica, I typically eat a good breakfast buffet wherever I have comps (and I will pay at HW,) then a steakhouse comp for supper.

This latest trip included a first time visit to Fairbanks at Hollywood. It might have been the best steak I ever ate.

When I visited late last year, I used express comps to eat at Chicago Steakhouse in Gold Strike. The steak itself was pretty good, but everything else, including service, sucked.

Our last trip to Chicago Steakhouse was a little mixed review as well. We ordered French Onion Soup. Mine had not, one, but TWO bay leaves in the bowl. I can see one perhaps getting by, but 2? Our steak was good, the sea bass was good, but the veggies cooked with it were terribly overcooked. We ordered a dessert to go, which was not as advertised, and our services was less than stellar. We have also had excellent meals there as well (including service), so it is obviously uneven. The best dinner EVER I had in Tunica was at Harrahs, before they closed. We ate at the steakhouse and Sylas was our server. IMO he was the best server in Tunica, bar none. (As a matter of fact, that's why we went there, to sit in his section). After Harrahs closed he moved to the steakhouse at Horseshoe and we at there once, but, although the service was excellent, the food was lacking.

I've never had the breakfast buffet at Hollywood, but we usually make it a point to have an early lunch there each trip and it has been very good.

Once you get home you realize food is kinda boring outside of the casino.

Aren't most things kinda boring outside of the casino? I know work is.
